A patient who asks ChatGPT “which hospital in Kuala Lumpur is best for knee replacement?” gets a short answer that names a few providers. If your hospital is not one of them, you lose that patient before they ever see your website.

GEO for healthcare brands is the work of changing that answer. This playbook covers the seven steps that matter most, in the order we would do them, with an example from a real medical travel platform.

Why AI answers name some providers and skip others

AI engines name the businesses they can find, read and double-check. In practice, that comes down to three things:

  1. A page that answers the question. Not a generic service page, but one that answers what the patient actually asked.
  2. The same facts everywhere. Doctor names, specialties, locations, hours and prices that match across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
  3. Other sources that agree. Reviews, health directories, news and community threads that mention you and repeat the same facts.

This framework comes from GTMLab’s teardowns of real AI answers across clinics, hotels and developers. It matches what the original GEO research paper found: adding citations, quotations and statistics to content raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

GEO for healthcare brands: the 7-step playbook

Step 1: Map the prompts patients really ask

Start with questions, not keywords. Pull them from front-desk calls, WhatsApp chats and consultation notes. Group them by intent:

  • Choice: “best cardiologist in Jakarta for valve surgery”
  • Cost: “how much is a knee replacement in Penang”
  • Trust: “is [hospital] accredited for international patients”
  • Fit: “which clinic does same-day dental implants in Kemang”

Thirty to fifty prompts is a workable starting set for one market.

Step 2: Record what AI says today

Run every prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews. Write down who is named, in what order, and which sources each answer cites. This baseline tells you whether the gap is your content, your facts or your third-party presence.

Step 3: Let AI crawlers in

Open your robots.txt. If it blocks GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, AI tools cannot read your pages. OpenAI states that sites must allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search results. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Step 4: Build pages for doctors, procedures and locations

Patients search for people and procedures, not brand names. Give every doctor, procedure and branch its own page, and open each with a direct answer. Include:

  • Credentials, specialty, languages and schedule for each doctor
  • Price ranges or cost guidance where regulations allow
  • Accreditation (JCI, MSQH, local equivalents) on hospital pages
  • Structured data: Physician, MedicalClinic or Hospital, MedicalProcedure and FAQPage

Step 5: Make your facts match everywhere

AI engines repeat what most sources agree on and drop what they don’t. Audit your site, Google Business Profile, health directories, insurer lists and social profiles. Fix mismatched hours, old addresses and doctors who have left.

Step 6: Earn mentions on the sources AI reads

Look at the sources cited in your Step 2 baseline. They are usually review sites, health directories, best-of lists, local news and forums. Get listed, collect provider-specific reviews, and contribute useful, compliant answers where patients ask questions.

Step 7: Track weekly and tie it to bookings

AI answers change from week to week. Re-run your prompts on a schedule, and set up a GA4 channel for AI referrals so you can see which visits turn into enquiries and appointments. Our guide to measuring AI search optimization for healthcare covers the KPIs in detail.

Example: how Medifly built AI-ready search demand

Medifly helps Indonesian patients get treated in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. GTMLab, which built the platform and runs its search, applied steps 3 to 5 at scale:

What was built Scale
Doctor profiles with specialty, hospital, credentials and cost estimate 3,167
Hospital pages with accreditation and doctor lists 299
Pages in English and Bahasa Indonesia 4,487
AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended

Between mid-June and late September 2026, organic clicks grew about 4× and impressions about 5.6×, and most of the growth came from doctor, hospital and cost searches rather than brand searches. GTMLab is clear that these are search figures, not bookings or AI citations, which is the right way to report early GEO work. The full write-up is in the Medifly case study.

Compliance notes for healthcare GEO

  • Keep patient data out of everything you publish or share with tools.
  • Have clinical content reviewed and show the reviewer’s name and credentials.
  • Avoid outcome guarantees and before/after claims that regulators restrict.
  • Cite trusted sources such as national health agencies and peer-reviewed research.

When to bring in a specialist

Steps 1 to 3 can be done in-house in a few days. Steps 4 to 7 take sustained work across content, technical SEO, listings and tracking. Frequently asked questions

What is GEO for healthcare brands?

It is the practice of making hospitals, clinics and health platforms easy for AI engines to find, verify and recommend, so they are named when patients ask AI tools for advice.

Does GEO replace SEO for hospitals?

No. Local “near me” searches still run largely through traditional search and Maps. GEO adds a layer on top for the questions patients ask AI assistants.

Which pages should a clinic fix first?

The pages behind your highest-value procedures and your most-requested doctors, because those match the prompts most likely to lead to a booking.
