Ask ChatGPT “which dental clinic in South Jakarta is best for implants?” and it will usually name two or three clinics, explain why, and suggest a next step. It does not show ten options. For most patients, those few names become the shortlist.
So what decides which hospitals and clinics get recommended by ChatGPT? It is less mysterious than it looks, and most of it can be checked in half an hour.
What happens when a patient asks ChatGPT for a provider
- It searches. For questions about specific places and providers, ChatGPT runs web searches and reads the results.
- It cross-checks. It compares what your website says with what directories, reviews, maps and articles say.
- It names the providers it can confirm. When several sources agree on who you are and what you do, you are a safe answer. When they don’t, you are skipped.
Why some clinics get recommended by ChatGPT
GTMLab, an agency that tracks AI answers for clinics and hospitals, breaks down real answers on its generative engine optimization service page. In healthcare, the named provider usually has all three of these:
| Reason | What it looks like for a clinic |
|---|---|
| The same facts everywhere | Google profile, website and health directories list the same services, hours, doctors and address |
| Specific proof | Reviews that mention the procedure and the doctor by name; credentials on each doctor’s page |
| An answer to the real question | Price ranges, languages and opening days written on the site so the AI can repeat them |
Six reasons ChatGPT skips your hospital
- Competitors are named, you are not: you are off the shortlist before anyone visits your site.
- The sources it reads never mention you: the answer is built from directories and review sites where you are absent.
- Your facts disagree: different hours on Maps and your website, a doctor who left still listed.
- It cannot read your site: robots.txt blocks AI crawlers.
- Your pages are hard for machines to read: no structured data for doctors, services or FAQs.
- No page answers the question: so the AI quotes a page that does, usually someone else’s.
A 30-minute self-audit
- Ask the question yourself (5 min). In ChatGPT, ask for the best provider of your top procedure in your city. Note who is named and ask where the answer came from.
- Check your robots.txt (2 min). Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. OpenAI says sites need to allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- Search your own name (10 min). Compare hours, address, doctors and prices across your website, Google Business Profile and the top two health directories.
- Test your structured data (5 min). Run your main procedure page through Google’s Rich Results Test. Look for Physician, MedicalClinic and FAQPage.
- Read your top procedure page (8 min). Does the first paragraph answer what a patient would ask? If it starts with “Welcome to our centre of excellence”, rewrite it.
Fixing these covers the basics. Our GEO playbook for healthcare brands covers the full process, including earning mentions on the sources AI reads.
Hospital groups and cross-border patients
For hospital groups, the same question often has a branch-level answer: “which hospital in Penang” rather than “which hospital group”. Each branch and each senior doctor needs its own clear, consistent page. For hospitals serving international patients, this extends to every language you market in. We cover that case in GEO for medical tourism.
Getting outside help
If the self-audit shows gaps you cannot close in-house, look for a partner that tracks real patient prompts and can show healthcare results. GTMLab’s free AI Visibility Check runs your category through five AI engines in about a minute and shows who is named instead of you, which makes a useful baseline before speaking to any agency.
Frequently asked questions
Can a clinic pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT’s recommendations are not sold as placements. You influence them by making your information complete, consistent and confirmed by other sources.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to start recommending a hospital?
Fixes on your own site can be picked up within weeks once they are crawlable. Recommendations that depend on reviews and third-party mentions usually take a few months.
Does ranking on Google help with ChatGPT?
Often, yes. AI tools frequently draw on pages that search engines already trust, but ChatGPT answers do not simply copy Google’s top results, so consistency across sources matters too.
